Basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma begins in the basal cells - a type of cell within the skin, new skin cells produced as the old die.

Most basal cell carcinomas are believed to be caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) sunlight. Avoid the sun and using sunscreen can help protect against basal cell carcinoma.
